The Lausanne Christmas market, Bô Noël, spans various neighborhoods of the city, posing a challenge for organizers in terms of managing visitor flow and facilitating the discovery of diverse offerings at each location. Faced with evident logistical constraints related to this outdoor event - lack of robust technical infrastructure, winter weather conditions, high foot traffic, etc. - a resilient solution that minimized points of failure was necessary to meet the client's expectations.
We designed a mobile application based on a "check-in" mechanism. The Bô Jeu app was promoted through Bô Noël's communication channels. After registration, users gained access to a stylized map of Lausanne displaying the market locations. To validate their presence, participants needed to physically visit the sites and perform a "check-in" via the app. Proximity detection was ensured by low-energy Bluetooth beacons specially designed to withstand challenging weather conditions. Different levels of rewards were implemented to encourage visitors to explore all the city markets while spending time there. With each "check-in," a countdown timer was activated, allowing for another "check-in" an hour later. The longer players spent at a given location, the higher the value of rewards, awarded through a random draw, increased. Simultaneously, additional reward tiers were introduced to acknowledge players who "checked in" at all city markets in a single day.
The inaugural Bô Jeu edition in 2022 proved successful, boasting a high number of participants and generous reward distribution. This initiative enabled Bô Noël to gather valuable attendance data for each market, facilitating informed insights for future enhancements. Bô Jeu will return in 2023 with improved features, aiming to make the experience even more engaging for players.
